Your filter plays a vital role in keeping your pool clean and clear. For optimal circulation and debris removal, it’s best to run your filter continuously. However, a minimum of 8 hours a day is recommended to maintain water quality.
The cleaning frequency depends on the type of filter you have:
Sand Filters: Backwash every 10 to 14 days or when the pressure gauge indicates a rise in pressure.
D.E. (Diatomaceous Earth) Filters: “Bump” the filter every 10 to 17 days and perform a thorough cleaning about once a month.
Cartridge Filters: Rinse off the cartridges with a hose about once a week to maintain efficiency.
Regular maintenance helps keep your pool water clear and your filtration system working at its best.
Sand Filters:
The most common and user-friendly option, sand filters are easy to operate. However, they require regular backwashing, which wastes a significant amount of chlorinated water.
D.E. (Diatomaceous Earth) Filters:
Known for delivering the best water clarity, D.E. filters require less frequent maintenance than sand filters. On the downside, their end-of-season cleaning can be more time-consuming.
Cartridge Filters:
These are the most convenient and easy to maintain, providing nearly the same water clarity as D.E. filters. However, cartridges need regular replacement and can tear easily, adding to maintenance costs.
Each filter type has its advantages based on your needs for water quality, maintenance, and cost.
pH is a crucial factor in maintaining proper water balance. When pH levels are too high (above 7.8), the water can become cloudy. If pH drops too low (below 7.2), it may cause corrosion of metal pipes, damage to plaster surfaces, rapid chlorine depletion, and skin or eye irritation for swimmers.
Alkalinity, sun, rain and bather load all affect pH levels. It is important to maintain proper pH levels to prevent loss of chlorine and irritation to swimmers..
“Shocking” refers to super-chlorinating the pool water to restore clarity and cleanliness. This process eliminates chloramines or bromamines—spent sanitizer particles—and effectively kills bacteria and algae that can cause cloudy water. To maintain optimal water quality, it’s recommended to shock your pool once a week, or more frequently during heavy use or when combined chlorine levels reach 0.7 ppm or higher.
